Bank Generator Services

Why Do I Need Maintenance on My Bank Generator?

Transactions, secure data, account management – all of these items are handled by financial institutions that rely on power to operate efficiently. Our banks are a financial lifeline, but when utility failures occur, an ongoing outage can be detrimental to the business success of those organizations. It can also mean that you don’t have the financial resources you need to complete daily tasks.

Bank generators provide support to keep systems operating and your money fluid. However, without a proper backup generator maintenance plan, your unit could fail, leaving your institution with the same set of problems.

Below you will find some of the reasons why not maintaining a generator can be dangerous and costly, as well as valuable advice about how to keep your bank generator in proper working condition.

The Risks of Not Servicing Bank Generators

With an ongoing maintenance schedule, you can prolong the life of your backup bank generator and often, units are able to run more efficiently. Without a proper service plan, your generator could experience a variety of challenges, such as:

  • Engine oil and filter media breakdown
  • Wet stacking in diesel engines
  • Leaking
  • Wearing of the block heater
  • Sputtering and stalls
  • Fuel tank leaking

While any of these issues can be a nuisance, there are larger consequences to consider. For example, generators commonly use at least one of two types of fuel (natural gas, diesel) and/or are powered by electricity. Malfunctioning units can cause serious injury, and bank generators not working correctly have led to carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning, electric shocks, fire, and burns.

To avoid injury, it is recommended that you have professional maintenance technicians complete ongoing maintenance. The commercial generator maintenance experts at LionHeart Critical Power Specialists are your team to trust. We will ensure your bank generators perform up to their capabilities and we can make any repair or part replacement, along with general maintenance updates. How Often Are Bank Generator Services Required?

There is no “one-size-fits-all” plan for bank generators as every institution and unit is different. Generally, each of these factors can help you make your own determination as to how often generator service might be required for your unit:

  • Age
  • Condition
  • Specific issue
  • Environment
  • Application

We recommend that you have PM1 maintenance service performed for your unit on a quarterly or semi-annual basis. During this service, our certified technicians will inspect your generator set, controls, and enclosure, topping off any fluids when necessary. This inspection is also a time to identify any minor concerns, and we will recommend repairs or replacements before issues become more prominent.

What Type of Maintenance Should be Completed for Bank Generators?

While PM1 maintenance is often a recommended solution, other maintenance plans could be better suited to your needs, based on environmental factors, or how your unit is used.

A minimum recommendation for preventive bank generator maintenance is our PM2 plan, which is often aligned with units that run less than 50 hours per year. While less run time may seem like an advantage, it actually means your unit could require a more thorough review.

We complete PM2 maintenance on an annual basis with the following services:

  • Inspection
  • Oil change
  • Replacement of fuel, coolant, and filters
  • Battery testing
  • Lubrication service
  • Cooling system
  • Generator cleaning
  • Engine exercising

With a PM2, LionHeart Critical Power Specialists additionally advise that our technicians visit every six months to conduct an additional inspection to review any challenges that may arise during the year. While onsite, we will provide repair or replacement recommendations.

Finally, your unit could be a prime candidate for load bank testing. This type of bank generator maintenance reviews unit operations and keeps your generator systems up to code.

Not sure what plan is the best fit for your institution? LionHeart can answer your questions and we will guide you through the process to help you determine the right plan for your needs.
